Junior Associate - Training Contracts

If you train as a lawyer at Linklaters, you are getting off to a flying start to a career in international business. You will gain both professionally and personally through working with talented and diverse people and different cultures.

You will learn to manage others and to take responsibility for their work as well as your own. We aim to help you develop your talents and therefore your confidence – both of which you will need to draw on when you act on some of the top deals for international and domestic clients. As a Junior Associate, you will contribute to such assignments, working as part of an international team alongside highly accomplished lawyers from different disciplines.

 

Overview

Departments - Corporate, Banking, Capital Markets, Notary (and opportunities in Tax, Litigation and Employment)

Reporting to - Practice Group Leaders, Amsterdam

 

Purpose

Junior Associates within the office are responsible for performing legal or legal-related duties as directed by more senior lawyers. Generally, such duties include legal drafting, proof reading, correspondence, attending client and internal meetings, researching and document preparation.

 

Key Dimensions

Junior Associates complete a thirty-seven month training contract in order to develop their legal capabilities and build on the knowledge gained from legal studies. This period of training is supervised by the Dutch Bar.

 

Key responsibilities and challenges

Specifically, the nature of a Junior Associate’s responsibilities includes the following:

  1. learning to analyse problems and find solutions through investigation of factual and legal issues;

  2. utilising in-house legal resources (including computerised research tools) and other business information;

  3. advising clients (under supervision);

  4. learning how to give technically accurate/commercially aware advice constructively and objectively;

  5. reviewing documentation in order to identify and analyse relevant factual and legal issues;

  6. developing an ability to draft documents and agreements in a clear and precise manner;

  7. attending and participating in client meetings;

  8. understanding the processes involved in handling both contentious and non-contentious negotiations; and

  9. developing organisational skills required to run a case/organise a transaction.

An important element of a Junior Associate’s training period is scheduled training activities which are designed to assist with the learning of new skills in addition to those which are acquired by on the job training. Such training is gained through:

  • weekly departmental meetings;

  • bi-weekly group information sessions;

  • Linklaters’ Junior Associate Induction course;

External training supervised and regulated by the Dutch Bar.

 

Qualifications

A qualification in Dutch law and a relevant Master’s degree are prerequisites for applications for this position.
